Family History Seminar Draws Strong Interest as Part of SG60 Celebrations

The Family History Seminar 2025 event marks the first collaboration between leading organizations of Singapore in the field of genealogy.

The Family History Seminar 2025 event marks the first collaboration between Chinese Ancestry Research, Genealogy Society Singapore, FamilySearch, and My China Roots, each a leading organization in the field of genealogy.

Area Family History Manager Derek Au from FamilySearch shared, “This is the first time that FamilySearch co-hosted a family history seminar in Singapore with three other local organizations in the genealogy field. We are very excited and grateful for this collaboration. We are very glad to see close to 100 participants who are mostly the general public attend this seminar and to see their interest in their family history work. The Spirit of Elijah [establishing genealogical links to ancestors] touches the hearts of all, not just the members.”

The full-day seminar offered a rare opportunity for attendees to learn, connect, and rediscover their roots through expert-led talks, panel discussions, and hands-on sessions. The first half of the seminar explored the theme “From Names to Narratives: Building Your Family Tree”.  Key topics discussed included building family trees, creating memory books and obtaining information from various sources including birth, marriage and death records from the National Archives and tombstones.

The second half of the seminar was a deep dive into Chinese genealogy with an introduction to understanding Chinese genealogy basics then moving on to exploring how to obtain and interpret Chinese genealogical records. Throughout the day, participants also enjoyed a hands-on segment to explore the FamilySearch website, where they began constructing their own family trees, guided by on-site experts.

Seah Wee Huang, a seminar attendee shared, “In every family, there is a story waiting to be shared. When we search for our family history, we do more than gather names and dates—we embark on a journey to discover who we are. We learn where we come from, the values that shaped us, and the faith that carried our ancestors through trials and triumphs. In tracing their footsteps, we find the threads of strength, resilience, and grace that God has lovingly woven through each generation. These stories connect us—not just to the past, but to one another—and remind us that we are part of something much greater than ourselves.”

As Singapore commemorates 60 years of nationhood, the Family History Seminar 2025 provided not only a celebration of the past but a meaningful step toward preserving family legacies for the future.
